Abstract

Introduction: obesity, as a risk factor and chronic non-communicable disease, represents a health problem for populations, especially for those patients who are infected by SARS-CoV-2.

Objective: To characterize the role of obesity as a predisposing factor for complications of COVID-19.

Methods: an updated bibliographic review on the subject was carried out for a total of 44 bibliographies. Scientific articles in English and Spanish were used, available in databases such as: PubMed, Scopus, Medline, SciELO, and in the Google Academic search engine.

Development: the evidence available to date suggests that people with chronic non-communicable diseases are at greater risk of serious complications from COVID-19 infection.

Chronic inflammation due to excess adipose tissue, changes in the immune system, the level of ECA2 expression, vitamin D deficiency, intestinal dysbiosis, as well as apnea, are characteristics of overweight patients that are related in a certain way with COVID-19.

Conclusions: obesity represents a predisposing factor for the development of complications inCOVID-19. Obese patients may have compromised immune, cardiovascular or respiratory systems, so it is necessary to alert this vulnerable population of the danger that being infected with SARS-CoV-2, represents for their health.
