Behavior of patients with surgical site infections. Holguin, 2018-2021

Introduction: Surgical site infection is an important clinical complication. It is currently the third leading cause of in-hospital infection and the main universally accepted parameter for measuring the quality of a surgical service.
Objective: To describe the behavior of surgical site infections in the general surgery service at Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital in Holguin during the period 2018-2021.
Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study was carried out applying descriptive statistics. The universe consisted of 62 cases infected at the surgical site and the entire universe was used. The variables sex, age, trimester, months of the year and causal germ were described.
Results: There was a predominance of patients between 40-49 years old (29.0%), as well as the males (51.6%), on the month of September (20.9%), in the second trimester (38.7%) and the causal germ Escherichia coli (43.5%) had a higher incidence.
Conclusions: During the period studied, the second trimester of the year is conducive to the Escherichia coli germ causing high numbers of surgical site infections and is associated with the fourth decade of life.
