Correction of severe dentomaxillofacial abnormality in a complex patient. Case report

Dentomaxillofacial abnormalities are conditions in which the facial skeleton is significantly different from the normal one, as they seriously affect facial appearance and produce considerable functional alterations. A 30-year-old patient with a history of slight mental retardation and a family history of this same mental condition, was admitted to the clinic. He was treated by the multidisciplinary Group of Orthognathic Surgery, several diagnosis were established: prognathism and mandibular macrognathism, macrogenesis, apertognathia, micrognacia and maxillary retrognathia, with a very unfavorable dental component due to several dental absences presenting an almost total inocclusion. It was decided to apply variants in the treatment protocols for these cases: labial myotherapy, comprehensive dental treatment, mandibular retroposition, multiple extractions of upper teeth and prosthetic rehabilitation. The patient obtained very satisfactory results, evolving for five years and managing to resolve his masticatory dysfunction and with an impressive improvement in aesthetics.
