Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease: A Case Report
Abstract
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is an idiopathic avascular osteonecrosis of the proximal femoral epiphysis that occurs in childhood. It is characterized by a self-limiting course involving phases of necrosis, fragmentation, reossification, and remodeling, leading to pain, limping, and functional limitation of the hip. This study is a clinical case report whose overall objective is to describe the key clinical, radiological, and therapeutic aspects of the disease, based on the presentation of a 7-year-old male schoolboy, with unilateral right-sided involvement. Typical clinical manifestations of this disease are outlined, as well as characteristic radiographic findings. In general, the diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history, a thorough physical examination, and serial imaging studies, which allow it to be distinguished from other causes of hip pain in children. Treatment is based on conservative measures; surgery is reserved for cases where no other alternative is available.
