Abstract

On December 31, 2019, an alert was generated due to a series of cases of atypical pneumonia in Wuhan, China, with no identified etiology. A new coronavirus later named SARS-CoV-2 was identified through bronchioloalveolar lavage. This is similar to a bat SARS virus, however, it seems that pangolins are the intermediate animals where recombination compatible with humans occurred and through which direct transmission was generated.

The evolution of this emerging virus has been accelerated, as is to be expected in pathogens that are new to humans and for which there is no immunity. It was identified at the end of December, on January 30, an international emergency was declared and on March 11, 2020, COVID-19 was declared a pandemic.

As a result of this pandemic that affects the world, Cuba has drawn up its strategies to maintain the training of medical science students with the required quality, but this time applying another teaching modality, distance education.

The University of Medical Sciences of Holguín, particularizing the measures taken by the Ministry of Public Health, has used different tools to continue the training of its students as future professionals and keep them informed of the evolution of this pandemic.
